Malayalam is a Dravidian language spoken in the Indian state of Kerala and the union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry by the Malayali people. The word Malayalam is made from compound words mala meaning “mountain” and alam meaning “land” or “locality. It is one of 22 scheduled languages of India and was designated a “Classical Language of India” in 2013. Malayalam has official language status in Kerala and Puducherry and is also the primary spoken language of Lakshadweep. Malayalam shares many features with other classical languages such as Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu. The language has several different dialects reflecting regional, class, and caste differences.
There are 15 vowel letters, 42 consonant letters, and a few other symbols in the modern Malayalam alphabet. The Malayalam script is a Vatteluttu alphabet that has been supplemented with Grantha alphabet symbols to represent Indo-Aryan loanwords.
